About 3700 Detroit casino workers are set to go on strike at noon on Tuesday if an agreement regarding their wages and benefits is not reached, the Detroit Casino Council (DCC) said on Monday. If the strike is called, it would affect operations at MGM Grand Detroit operated by MGM Resorts International, MotorCity Casino and Hollywood Casino at Greektown operated by Penn Entertainment. In September, 99% of voting members from all the five unions participating in the DCC – Unite Here Local 24, UAW, Teamsters Local 1038, Operating Engineers Local 324 and Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters – voted in favor of allowing the DCC negotiating committee to call a strike, indicating dissatisfaction over their wages and benefits. The Detroit casino industry has seen a good recovery in 2021 with revenues reaching $2. The DCC claim that if the workers are forced to strike, it could cost the operators at MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity and Greektown a combined $34 million in revenue each day, with the biggest impact to MGM Grand ($17 million). With workers across industries including rail and healthcare, bargaining for higher wages and increased benefits in the current period with tight labor markets and high inflation, the Detroit strike announcement comes as 40000 Las Vegas hospitality workers employed by MGM, Caesars Entertainment and Wynn Resorts enter talks for higher wages and benefits.

Last Thursday, Culinary Workers and Bartenders Unions held a “picket” at properties operated by both MGM and Caesars Entertainment, although they have so far, not announced an official strike deadline.
