Seth Davies, a professional poker player, was among the group of two dozen individuals dressed mostly in sweatshirts and baseball caps seated around three well-worn poker tables playing Texas Holdem in the Amazon Room of Las Vegas' Rio Casino. The poker tournament, officially known as the World Series of Poker Super High Roller, but referred to as the 250K by the participants, required a 250000 buy-in from each of them. Davies, a 33-year-old former college baseball player with a trimmed light brown beard and intense demeanor, had managed to grow his starting stack of 15 million in tournament chips to more than two million, some of which he then pushed forward as a raise after secretly examining the six and seven of diamonds he had been dealt.

The other two players at the table, a fellow professional (Dan Smith) with a round face, mustache, and whimsically worn cowboy hat, called his bet.
